Electrocution Injuries

Being injured by electricity is a terrifying process that is often deadly. The dangers associated with electrical injuries are so serious that it can be difficult to fully comprehend them. These life-threatening injuries often occur as a result of faulty consumer products and of work involving electricity, such as construction work. If you or someone you love has suffered an electrocution injury as a result of someone else’s negligence, don’t wait to reach out to an experienced Los Angeles personal injury attorney.

The Basics

The National Center for Biotechnology Information shares all of the following information about electrocution injuries:

Electrocution injuries are a relatively common form of trauma, and they have a high mortality rate.

When electrocution injuries aren’t fatal, they often lead to multiple tissue or organ dysfunction.

Electrocution injuries are generally divided into four categories that include flash (these injuries cause superficial burns with no electricity traveling beyond the skin), flame (these injuries are caused when an arc flash ignites the victim’s clothing – electricity may or may not pass through the victim’s skin), lightning (these injuries are caused by an extremely powerful but short electrical surge that causes electricity to course through the victim’s entire body, and true (these injuries are caused when the victim becomes part of the electrical circuit, and there is usually an entry and exit wound). Any one of these electrocution injuries can be extremely dangerous, and the more serious among them are often deadly.

At least 50 percent of electrocutions on the job are caused by contact with power lines (construction work, for example), and about another 25 percent are caused by working with electrical machines or tools.

Electrocution injuries account for about five percent of all admissions to burn units.

There are at least 30,000 non-fatal incidences of electrical shock in the United States each year.

There are about 1,000 electrocution-related deaths each year in the United States.

The Mayo Clinic Weighs In

According to the Mayo Clinic :

Many factors can play a role in how serious the electrocution injury is, such as the kind of current, the voltage involved, how the electricity traveled through the victim's body, the victim's health generally, and how quickly the victim receives treatment.

An electrocution injury doesn’t always burn or damage the skin, but electricity that passes through the body can lead to life-threatening internal damage and even to cardiac arrest. One’s outside appearance can be deceiving.

Under the right circumstances, even a small amount of electricity can lead to a fatal electrocution injury.

Every accident involving electricity is a serious accident that should be taken extremely seriously.

Electrocutions are one of the Fatal Four

Construction work is dangerous work. In fact, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) reports that of the 4,779 work-related fatalities in 2018, 1,008 of them occurred in the construction industry. Construction work is so dangerous that the most common accident categories – making up almost 60 percent of total construction worker deaths in 2018 – are known as the fatal four, which include:

Falls at 33.5 percent

Accidents involving being struck by an object at 11.1 percent

Electrocution injuries at 8.5 percent

Accidents involving being caught in or between two unyielding forces at 5.5 percent

Electrocution injuries are so prevalent on construction sites that they make this short, deadly list.

Your Damages

The damages associated with electrocution injuries are difficult to overstate. There is often a strong emotional component along with the physical consequences. If you or your loved one has suffered an electrocution injury, your medical expenses alone can include:

Emergency treatment and transportation at the scene

Extensive, specialized medical treatment and care that can involve a burn center

Ongoing health care that addresses your original injuries and any evolving secondary health concerns

Prescription medications

Adaptive physical equipment and physical adaptations to your home or vehicle

Home health care

Electrocution injuries are so serious that your related medical needs will follow you into your future.

In addition to medical costs, there are lost wages to consider. A serious electrocution injury can lead to an extended break from work – if you’re able to return to work at all. Time off work means decreased earnings, and you could experience a decreased earning potential that leaves you with a permanent loss. It’s also important to consider the emotional component associated with a diminished career, which can be significant. Our careers help define who we are – and our place in the world – and a psychological loss of this nature can be extremely difficult.

Finally, there is your pain and suffering to consider. The physical and emotional pain and suffering that attends tragic, violent accidents involving electrocution tend to be immense. The serious nature of these injuries often results in a protracted healing process that requires significant psychological effort to overcome. The need for ongoing mental health counseling is not uncommon.

Wrongful Death Claims

Electrocution injuries are so dangerous that it’s important to address the issue of wrongful death. If you’ve lost a family member to an electrocution injury that was caused by someone else’s negligence, a wrongful death claim can help you address the damages you suffer as a result of your loss. While your loved one obviously can’t pursue damages, you can do so on his or her behalf.  Although nothing can bring your loved one back to your family, a wrongful death claim can help you continue moving forward on the difficult path toward healing.
